Managing a fleet is no small task. From collating data from multiple telematics providers to overseeing with tools that don’t talk to each other, you may be spending more time on admin than you’d like to make impactful decisions. But a centralised solution can change everything.

In this article, we’ll look at how APIs and integrated telematics simplify the fleet management process, providing flexibility for your businesses and enabling you to streamline data from every aspect of your fleet. Plus, we’ll show how Inauro’s AI-powered platform can turn that unified data into actionable insights, helping you get back to what you do best — keeping your fleet running smoothly.

Introducing APIs for integrated telematics

So, what is an API? An API (application programming interface) is a set of rules allowing different software systems to share data and communicate.

In the context of fleet management, APIs enable telemetry devices and systems from different manufacturers to send data to a central platform, benefiting not just fleet managers but the entire business. Inauro Chief Commercial Officer Max Girault explains.

“Fleet managers tend to have a certain level of control with the tools they have because they know their assets intimately,” says Max. “But if you think of fleet management as a service provided to the rest of the business, APIs help consolidate that information. Linking all of these processes together is about simplifying fleet management and enabling the fleet manager to provide enhanced visibility and dynamism to the other aspects of the business that rely on fleet data.”

Max acknowledges that establishing API connections can take time. But Inauro’s Perspio™ platform is designed to simplify the process. Once permissions are set, the data flows automatically into the platform. Fleet managers and other team members without technical expertise can then easily access real-time information on their assets.

The benefits of telematics integration in fleet management

Fleet data management invariably means using multiple telemetry solutions. However, this can lead to fragmented data. Inauro solves this challenge by integrating and consolidating the data from siloed systems to provide businesses with a comprehensive view of their fleet in one central platform.

“Perspio™ was designed not as just another piece of software but to enhance the systems you already use,” says Max. “Our goal is to make sure your existing tools can work together seamlessly, and in real time, so each one becomes more powerful. By bringing all these components together, you create a more efficient, connected experience that enhances the value of the tools you already rely on.

“For example, we can take odometer readings from your fleet-tracking system and import them directly into your maintenance software. This way, the software gets a real-time, accurate view of the vehicle without relying on manual input or paperwork. By automating this process, everything stays up-to-date instantly, making your maintenance system more efficient and reliable.”

Inauro gives organisations the flexibility to choose the best telemetry tools for each asset while still keeping everything managed centrally. This way, each department gets the data it needs while maintaining sight of the bigger picture.

An integrated telematics solution for Transport for NSW

When Transport for NSW approached Inauro, the department faced a common challenge that many fleet managers deal with: managing a large fleet generating plenty of data but lacking the capacity to fully leverage it. “They had about 1000 assets and knew the data could be valuable, but they were struggling to use it effectively,” says Max.

“At the same time, they were working on improving other systems like their ERP and maintenance management, but their real-time data was fragmented across multiple providers. This patchwork approach was making it difficult for them to get a clear, unified view of their fleet.”

Transport for NSW manages a vast area, operating out of 32 depots. The fleet is diverse and includes road assets like tow trucks, tippers, rollers, transport trucks, utes and vans. At the depot level, there was oversight, but the broader transport division lacked a centralised view.

“The Road Maintenance and Resilience division wanted data on asset utilisation to better inform their asset replacement process,” Max says. “They needed a clearer, more centralised view of their fleet across all depots and to ensure that each depot was working within the same system.”

That’s when the department reached out to Inauro. “We’re working with them to bring all telemetry data together into one platform to gain more oversight, better manage their fleet and improve decision-making.”
